tensile testing & compressional tests

Original Technology has a laboratory for tensile testing of steel. This is for quality assurance purposes and the service is also offered to mines to check quality compliance of bolts from other suppliers. Tensile Testing is a fundamental materials science test in which a sample is subjected to a controlled tension until failure.

From these measurements the following properties can also be determined:

Shepherd’s crooks - used as a primary or secondary support and may be used in conjunction with meshing and lacing where required comprises of a high tensile steel rebar cut to the required length and bent on one end resemble a hook. This mechanism provides passive support. Bonded on to the rock by grouting cement.

Tendon Straps

Tendon used to support fractured ground between rock anchors by providing a continuous mesh between the anchor points comprises of 5 strands of high tensile partially malleable steel of 5mm thickness held together by 3mm steel strands across. These are manufactured at 3m lengths. These straps are used in conjunction with rock bolts and they provide passive support.

Cable Anchors

Cable anchors are flexible high-tensile steel strands of specific lengths, anchored inside a drilled hole by mechanical expansion shells. They have a load bearing capacity of 25-40 tonnes depending on the number of strands and thickness of the strands.

MECHANICAL SHELL END ANCHORED BOLTS

Mechanical shell end anchored bolts are used to provide active long term support on the rock. The 3-leaf expansion shell has exclusive features that ensure positive anchorage under the most arduous conditions. The expansion shell unit is manufactured as a ‘bail type’ unit i.e. 3-leafed mechanical anchor which conforms to the hole diameter. This feature ensures a more even load distribution between the anchor and the rock at the anchor point. The mechanical shell anchored bolt is manufactured as per the customer's specifications.

What is Minecrete S³ ?

MineCrete S³ is a combination of exclusive innovative technologies incorporating specialized concrete formulations and polypropylene fiber. Due to its mechanical properties superior to the conventional shotcrete with MineCrete you can reduce the current thickness of the shotcrete in half.

Tensile Bond Strength

The Figure illustrates the best set up and possible failure locations in the tensile bond strength testing. MineCrete was poured onto rock subtrate (norite) by making use of a 5mm thick Perspex glass with a 35mm diameterhole. Removal of perspex glass leaves behind uniform MineCrete thickness and does not necessitate any overcoming process.

Tensile Bond Strength

When shotcrete is used as an integral part of a mine's ground support system, it is important to know the strength properties of the in place shotcrete.

Besides conventional strength parameters, such as the shotcrete's flexural, compressive, or tensile strength, the adhesion or bond strength of the shotcrete to the host rock must also be known in order to adequateley determine the shotcrete's ability to support the immediate ground near the surface of the mine opening.

Consequently, the adhesion strength of the shotcrete is a necessary parameter for ground support design.
Two basic types of shotcrete failure modes.
A: Fallout of only shotcrete indicating poor adhesion;
B: Fallout of shotcrete and rock indicating zones of weak rock (after Malmgren & Svensson, 1999)
